caption: PAPA SAN LEONE I (around 390 - Nov 10 461) called the Great, was born in Rome, elected in 440. During his long pontificate he worked for the union of the Church against heresies, homogeneous organization of ecclesiastical life in the provinces and supporting the primacy of the bishop of Rome over the whole Church. In 452, at the request of the Emperor, he met Attila Governolo of Roncoferraro at Mantua and caused him to stop the invasion of the Huns. Portrait, detail from a chromolithographic postcard of the 'Collection of Roman Popes' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him (in whole # 29869). Rome, October 1903.
