caption: POPE FORMOSO (approximately 816 - 896), was born in Ostia (Rome); elected in 891, in 896 crowned Arnulf, King of Germany, as Emperor, ensuring its protection from the growing power of Lamberto of Spoleto (which he himself had previously crowned King of Italy and Emperor). While she was preparing to attack the Duchy of Spoleto, Arnulf, however, he was seized with paralysis and forced to return to Bavaria, and Spoleto took the opportunity to attack Rome again. Pope Formoso died two months later, probably poisoned; was buried in the Vatican, and his body, exhumed nine months later by his successor Stephen VII (elected by the party of Spoleto), was gruesomely protagonist of the so-called 'synod of the corpse', where he was tried after death - in court - just for having sided with Arnolfo. Postcard chromolithographic n. 150 from the 'Collection of the Popes Romans' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him. Rome, October 1903.
