caption: Pope St. Pontian (? - 235), martyr of Calpurnia people. Born in Rome, elected in 230, was the second pope in history to abdicate. In 235 Massimino Trace, he not just proclaimed emperor, ordered a persecution against the leaders of the Church: Pope Pontian was deported to Sardinia and condemned to perpetual forced labor in the mines. So that it could elect a new pope, Pontian resigned on September 28, 235. The same year he died martyred in strokes of the cane; his body was buried in the Catacombs of San Callisto. Postcard chromolithographic n. 245 from the 'Collection of the Popes Romans' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him. Rome, October 1903.
