caption: PAPA GIOVANNI XXIII of the Great Western Schism (1370 - 22 December 1419), aka Baldassarre Cossa, born in Naples. He was elected in 1410 by the Council of Pisa with the task of orchestrating the recomposition of the Roman obedience and the one in Avignon, ending the Great Western Schism, as the successor of Alexander V in turn elected in the place of the Roman Pope Gregory XII and dell'avignonese Benedict XIII. On pressure of Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg summoned the Council of Constance, and ceased his pontificate in 1415 when he submitted to Martin V, the new pope expressed unanimously by the council.
