PAPA GREGORIO XII of the Great Western Schism (circa 1335 -1417), born Angelo Correr, born in Venice, elected in 1406; already patriarch of Constantinople, and from 1405 Cardinal-Priest of S. Marco, became involved in the struggles of the Western Schism. Elected Pope in fact on 30 November 1406 (consecrated December 19), when the Avignon Pope Benedict XIII was from 1394, he tried to agree with the opponent to achieve a simultaneous abdication. The goal was reached when the Council of Pisa deposed Benedict XIII and Pope Gregory XII (1409), and elected Pope Alexander V (Pietro Filargo); Gregory XII initially did not accept the new pope, as well as Avignon, but then the aim of reconciliation of the schism, the Council of Constance gave up the tiara (4 July 1415), receiving in return the title of cardinal-bishop of Porto and linked to the mark of Ancona, and the right to have the first place after the pontiff. Portrait, detail from a chromolithographic postcard of the 'Collection of Roman Popes' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him (in whole # 5017). Rome, October 1903.
