caption: POPE VICTOR III (1027 - SEPTEMBER 16, 1087), aka Epifani Dauferius Del Zotto, said Desiderio from Montecassino, born in Benevento, elected in 1086. After three decades devoted to reconstruction and to the cultural and artistic growth of the Abbey of Monte Cassino, was He elected Pope while in Rome was spreading the anti-pope Clement III. In his brief pontificate, he convoked a synod at Benevento for the most urgent issues, such as the anti excommunication and the withdrawal of ecclesiastical positions obtained for a fee (lay investiture), as well as the proclamation of a crusade that led the victory over the Muslims in Madja ( Africa).
