caption: POPE SAN CELESTINO V (1209/1215 - 19 May 1296) born Pietro Angelerio (or Angeleri), known as Pietro da Morrone and venerated as Pietro Celestino, elected in 1294 after more than two years of vacation of the throne; an anacorete over eighty, he was chosen for his integrity and purity outside the circle of cardinals, who could not express a candidate acceptable to all the opposing forces. He ruled the Church for 5 months and 8 days. About four months after his coronation, despite the numerous attempts to dissuade him made by Charles of Anjou, on 13 December 1294 Celestino V abdicated: "I Pope Celestino V, driven by legitimate reasons, for humility and weakness of my body and malice of the plebs, in order to recover the lost tranquility with the consolation of former life, I freely and spontaneously abandon the Pontificate (...) ». In the same December 1294, the Holy House of Mary of Nazareth reached Loreto. After the abdication, while he was preparing to return to his homeland, Pietro Celestino was captured and locked up in the fortress of Fumone, in Ciociaria, a castle in the territories of the Caetani and direct property of the new Pope Boniface VIII; here the old Pietro died on May 19, 1296, greatly weakened by forced deportation and subsequent imprisonment. Chromolithographic postcard n. 67 from the 'Collection of Roman Supreme Pontiffs' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by him. Rome, October 1903.
