caption: POPE JOHN XXIII of the great Western schism (about 1370 - 22 December 1419), born Baldassarre Cossa, born in Naples. He was elected in 1410 by the Council of Pisa with the task of orchestrating the recomposition between the Roman and Avignon obedience, putting an end to the Great Western Schism, as successor of Alexander V in turn elected in place of the Roman Pope Gregory XII and Benedict XIII from Avignon. Under pressure from the Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg, he called the council of Constance, and ended his pontificate in 1415 when he submitted to Martin V, the new pope unanimously expressed by the Council.
