caption: POPE PAUL III (1468-1549), to Alessandro Farnese century, born in Rome, elected in 1534. Entrance of Charles V in Rome: return from the victorious expedition in Tunis in 1536, the Emperor stops in the Eternal City to meet personally the Pope, with the hope of identifying agreed political strategies for the Empire's needs and of the Church, in the new scenario that is being formed with the Protestant Reformation. To address the issues of reform, and to try to reconcile disagreements between the Emperor and the King of France, the Pope convened the Council of Trent in December of 1545, on which work will proceed for eighteen years until 1563, beyond death Paul III, growing for three pontificates.
