caption: POPE MARCELLO II (1501-1555), born Marcello Cervino, born in Monte Fano, elected in 1555, was the last pope to keep his baptismal name, to honor his predecessor Pope Marcello I. Humble and charitable, he began the pontificate by donating the funds allocated for the sumptuous coronation rite to charity, replaced by a sparse ceremony, and convincing his relatives not to join him in Rome, in contrast to the nepotistic customs of the time. Seized by a stroke on April 30, 1555, he ruled the Church for only 22 days. Chromolithographic postcard n. 35 from the 'Collection of Roman Supreme Pontiffs' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by him. Rome, October 1903.
