POPE MARCELLO II (1501-1555), aka Marcello Cervino, born in Monte Fano, elected in 1555, was the last pope to keep his baptismal name, to honor his predecessor Pope Marcellus I. humble and charitable, began the papacy donating to charity the funds allocated for the lavish coronation ceremony, a substitute from a frugal ceremony, and convincing his relatives not to meet him in Rome, in contrast to the custom of the nepotiste. Seized with apoplexy April 30, 1555, he governed the Church for only 22 days. Postcard chromolithographic n. 35 from the 'Collection of the Popes Romans' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him.
