EXPLORATIONS Ferdinando Magellano's travels (October 17, 1480 - April 27, 1521), a Portuguese explorer and navigator who, sailing on September 20, 1519 by Sanlúcar de Barrameda on behalf of the King of Spain Charles V, first reached the Indies navigating westward and through the southward pass that has taken its name, the first European also in the Pacific Ocean. Keeping the route to the west Magellan found death in the Philippines by the hands of a group of rebel indigenous people who did not accept their King's submission to the crown of Spain, but the rest of the expedition, returning to the port on September 6, 1522, the first complete circumnavigation of the Earth globe. Of the only 18 survivors of the original crew were Juan Sebastián Elcano, who took command of the death of Magellan, and Antonio Pigafetta, a simple armed man who had the precious function of the company's historian. With this experience it was finally proved that the earth is a sphere (and of greater circumference than ever hypothesized) that the American continent is circumnavigable as the African, and that by completing a globe of the world following the direction of the sun they lose 24 hours.
