St. Nicholas (March 15, 270 - December 6, 343), bishop of Myra, also known as St. Nicholas of Bari for the great devotion he has given him in the city that in 1087, when Myra fell into Muslim hands, contended with Serenissima relics. Born in Licia by wealthy Greek Christian parents, who still lost their youth for a pestilence, he chose to devolve rich inheritance into donations to the poor. Ordained priest in Myra, and then consecrated bishop, he underwent jail and exile under Diocletian, resuming pastoral activity in 313, with Constantine. The popular tradition attributes several miracles, among which the resurrection of three cruelly killed children and put under the salt by a perverted butcher, to resale the meat during famine. From the figure of St. Nicholas, benefactor and protector of the poor and innocent to whom he made gifts and gifts, with special dedication to the children, came the character of Santa Claus. Commemoration on December 6, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth in the sky). Colored Etching, Italy 1886
