IMMACULATED CONCEPTION OF BEATA VERGINE MARIA The Catholic Church asserts that every human being is born spotted by the guilt of original sin; so that the Messiah could be incarnated preserved by sin, God provided that the Blessed Mary, destined to conceive it virginally in the Annunciation, was the same, unique in the progeny of Eve, conceived immune from original sin and therefore worthy to receive in the pure belly the Son divine. The Virgin's superiority to original sin is symbolized in religious iconography with the serene and sure gesture of crushing the serpent's head under his naked foot. The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed by Pope Pius IX with the bubble 'Ineffabilis Deus' on December 8, 1854, and on that day the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity. Colored Etching, Italy 1886
