Pope MARTINO I (? - September 16, 655), a martyr. Born in Todi, he was Apostolic Nuncio to Pope Teodoro I in Constantinople. In July 649 it was consecrated by the Pope, without waiting for the imperial imperialism, in open challenge to the Byzantine Emperor Constant II towards the authority of which the clergy and the Roman people were growing uneasy. In the following October, the first Council of Lateranese was appointed, in order to counteract the monotheistic heresy supported by the emperor. He replied with a conspiracy to assassinate him, but the wizard miraculously missed the target, and the exile Olimpio who had hired him convinced that the emperor was wrong. Constant II then sent the new excommunication Theodore I Calliope, with the order now to translate the Pope to Constantinople, even though he was seriously ill, to undergo the process of high treason towards the state, having induced the exile Olimpio to transgress the the Emperor's orders. Condemned to death, the punishment was switched to the exile for intercession of Patriarch Paul II. He was abducted by the terrible imprisonment in March 655 and deported to Cherson (Sevastopol) in Crimea, where he died after a few months, suffering mainly from the abandonment of the Church of Rome, who only two months after his arrest had already specified and accepted the " election of Eugene I, the new Pope imposed by the Emperor. The commemoration at the time of the press was celebrated on November 12, while the Roman Martiology of 2001 sets liturgical memory on April 13, the day when the Greek Church reminds him.
