Saint PIETRO of Alexandria (? - 25 November 311), Pope of the Coptic Church, highest office of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in Egypt. Entrusted by his parents to the patriarch Teona so that he grew up as a priest, he was first a reader, then a deacon, and finally reached office. Distinguished at the theological school of Alexandria for the profound knowledge of the sacred scriptures, the patriarch Teona designated him as his successor: he was in charge in the tragic decade of persecutions against Christians ordered by Diocletian. Arrested for his position in the Egyptian Church, Melezio di Licopoli took advantage of his absence to order some new bishops against his consent, including Arius, whom Pietro had previously excommunicated. He was nicknamed "the Seal of the Martyrs" because it is believed that his beheading, which took place on November 25, 311, was the last execution of the long period of persecution. The Catholic and Orthodox Church remember him on November 25, the day of his death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven), the Coptic one on November 26th. Colored engraving, Italy 1886
