Sant'ODDONE di Cluny (878 circa - 18 November 942), second abbot of the abbey of Cluny, one of the major architects of the Cluniac reform. Son of a feudal lord, he grew up at the court of William I of Aquitania, forming in Paris with Remigio of Auxerre; when he was about thirty, he became a monk, a priest and a superior in the school of the abbey of Baume and here he met Bernone, who was the founder and first abbot of Cluny and in his time designated Oddone as his successor. In 931, authorized by Pope John XI, Oddone began the reform of the monasteries of Aquitaine, northern France and Italy, making Cluny the new model of Benedictine monasticism. Oddone's reform also touched on the musical notation, for which he introduced the conventional use of the letters A to G for the notes from La a Sol, still used in the Anglo-Saxon countries. Commemoration on November 18th, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored engraving, Italy 1886
