SAN FRANCESCO d'Assisi (26 September 1181 or 1182 - late evening on 3 October 1226), born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone, Italian religious and poet, founder of the first Order of the Friars Minor, who then took on the title of Franciscan order . Proclaimed holy by Pope Gregory IX less than two years after his death, on July 16, 1228, and by Pope Pius XII, chief patron of Italy on June 18, 1939, together with St. Catherine of Siena. Commemoration on 4 October, the day when his body was moved from Porziuncola to the parish church of San Giorgio in Assisi, where he remained until 1230 when he was brought to the lower Basilica, built by Friar Elia, who became Minister General of the Order.
