ALLEGORY of the "Fusion of Necessity" of Plato. Sitting on his throne, the goddess Necessity holds a melt whose counterweight consists of concentric circles, each of which has a siren, which emits a single sound, forming a pleasant harmony with the others. Around they sit by singing the goddess's daughters, called Parche or Moire, symbolizing the Past (Lachesis), the Present (Clot) and the Future (Atropos), waiting for the herald to present their souls to be destined. Engraving by Chevignard, France 1857.
