Santi COSMA and DAMIANO (III century - 303) also known as 'holy doctors', traditionally considered by two twins of Arab origin (although Damian is often referred to as the minor), doctors in Syria, and martyrs under Diocletian. They practiced the medical profession completely free of charge in the name of Christian charity by performing prodigious healings: exemplifying the replacement of the infant's leg with the healthy one of a newly deceased Ethiopian. They suffered a fierce martyrdom: miraculously escaped stoning, crucifixion, whipping, darts and spears, drowning after being rushed to the sea, bound by a cliff to the burning furnace, were finally decapitated at Cirro, Antioch. Patrons of doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, hairdressers and dentists, the Catholic tradition established liturgical memory on September 27, probably on the anniversary of the dedication to the saints of the Roman basilica; Paul VI forwarded her to September 26, making her optional worship. Colored Etching, Italy 1886
