San GENNARO (272 - 19 September 305) Bishop and martyr of the faith under Diocletian, main patron saint of Naples. According to the hagiographic tradition San Gennaro bishop of Benevento, the reader Desiderio and the deacon Festo went on a pastoral visit to Pozzuoli; arrested by the governor of the Campania Dragonzio, were condemned to be torn by lions (or bears) in the amphitheater, but the beasts, blessed by the bishop, would suddenly become meek, bowing to the saint. The governor then had the three Christians beheaded at the Solfatara of Pozzuoli. Commemoration on September 19, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored engraving, Italy 1886
