St. TOMMASO OF VILLANOVA (circa 1488 - September 8, 1555), to the century Tomás García Martínez, a Spanish religious, an ascetic and preacher belonging to the Order of the hermits of St. Augustine. Of modest origins, however, he studied at the University of Alcalá de Henares, becoming a professor of philosophy. In 1516 he entered the Augustinians, then became a priest and later Provincial of Andalusia and Castile, the first to send Augustinian missionaries to evangelize the Americas. Spiritual advisor and personal confessor of Charles V, who offered him in vain the archbishop of Granada, was finally elected archbishop of Valencia. Proclaimed holy by Pope Alexander VII in 1658, he is the patron saint of Genzano of Rome, who celebrates him on September 18th. Commemoration on September 8, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth in the sky). Colored Etching, Italy 1886
