Sant'EGIDIO (circa 640 - circa 720) hermit and then abbot of a monastery in the south of France; according to the legend, who recently arrived in Provence from Native Athens, retired into a desert place in the Settimania, with the only companionship of a deer that allowed him to feed on his milk. An arrow destined for the animal, thrown by the King of the Goths during a hunt, did not kill him just because he hit the holy man with a leg; the sovereign then gave him lands, on which Egidio built the monastery of which he became abbot. Commemoration on September 1, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored Etching, Italy 1886
