JACOB OF QUERCIA (circa 1374 - 1438), nickname of Jacopo di Pietro d'Agnolo di Guarnieri, Italian sculptor. His style was drawn to the late Gothic style by Giovanni Pisano, opening in an original way to the classicist influences of the emerging Florentine Renaissance. His singular art did not have direct prosecutors, but could perhaps be later accepted by Michelangelo. The portrait is enclosed in a frame decorated with caryatids holding the tools of art and an allegory of sculpture. Colored illustration on a 16th century xylographic basis, from the treaty 'Le Vite de' the most outstanding painters, sculptors and architects' by Giorgio Vasari (30 July 1511 - 27 June 1574), second enlarged and revised edition, Giunti, Florence 1568
