Sant'EUGENIO (IV century - 505) Bishop of Carthage. Dominated by Unicar King of the Vandals, Aryan, the diocese of Carthage remained vacant until the despot allowed the faithful to elect his own bishop, and was named Eugenio. The monarch therefore called for an ecumenical council to which he invited all the African bishops, hoping to persuade them to embrace Arianism, but Eugenio maintained loyalty to Christian orthodoxy and was therefore confined to Turris Tamalleni. Returning to Carthage at Unnerico's death, he suffered the persecution of the Transylvanian successor, who ultimately forced him to exile. He died in Gaul near Albi; According to a popular tradition, the saint would have taken refuge on the island of Bergeggi along with San Vendemiale, and the island would then be moved from the African coast to Liguria. Commemoration on July 13th. Colored Etching, Italy 1886
