St. BONIFACIO (Wynfrith century, about 680 - 5 June 754) Benedictine monk of Anglo-Saxon origin, bishop of Mainz, missionary in Hesse and Thuringia, is considered the apostle of Germany. Returning to Hesse after being ordained bishop in Rome, he had a giant oak tree felled in a wood, which the pagan populations believed to have magical powers as the residence of a god. The pagans rushed to witness the revenge of the offended god and Boniface took the opportunity to bring them the Good News. Instead of the demolished oak he had the first church dedicated to St. Peter erected. He suffered martyrdom at Dokkum, along with about fifty monks and the catechumens with whom they had gathered to celebrate the day of Pentecost, under the onslaught of a group of Frisians. Commemoration on 5 June, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored engraving, Italy 1886
