SAN GOTTARDO (960- 5 May 1038) Bishop of Hildesheim, theologian and pedagogue, prior and rector of the monastery school and abbot of Niederaltaich reformer, Tegernsee and Hersfeld, promoter of the monastic ideal of Cluny. Valente architect, he built and consecrated in Niederaltaich more than thirty new churches. This collection is commemorated on May 23, when among other things, in 1882 was inaugurated the long Swiss rail tunnel 15 km, connecting the valley of the River Reuss and Leventina valley, excavated under the spending dedicated to the saint.
