caption: St. JOHN OF Lycopolis (Assiut, 305-395) In Carpenter's origin, to 25 years took monastic vows and lived for fifteen years in various Egyptian monasteries, then came in the Thebaid where he became a hermit on a mountain, spending his life in a small walled cell. He devoted himself to prayer, meditation and teaching. According to the hagiographic tradition, he had the gift of prophecy, healing and knowledge of the hidden sins of its visitors.
