caption: San PORFIRIO (347 circa - 26 February 420), bishop of Gaza. Born in Greece, from about 378 he led a hermit life in the Scetes desert in Egypt, then in a cave near the Jordan in Palestine. The deprivation of this period by an anchorite put him in a critical state of health, so much so that wishing to visit the Holy Places, in the pilgrimage to Jerusalem he had to be transported. He miraculously healed during a visit to Calvary. Around 395 he was ordained bishop of Gaza, where he carried out a fervent anti-pagan activity, obtaining from Emperor Theodosius I the authorization to overthrow the idolatrous temples. Commemoration on 26 February, the day of death (Dies Natalis, birth to heaven). Colored engraving, Italy 1886
