caption: HENRY IV of Bourbon (1553-1610) son of Queen Jeanne III of Navarre and raised in Protestantism, his heir as Henry III of Navarre, married in 1570 Margaret of Valois, sister of the Catholic king of France, Charles IX. He abjured the first time immediately after the wedding, following the events of St. Bartholomew, but soon retracted, returning at the head of the Protestant faction. He became heir presumptive to the crown of France after the assassination of Henry III in 1589, but the Catholic League refused to recognize its position, so to get the abjured power for good in 1593.
