caption: Filippo CAMPERIO (1873-1945) lieutenant, military observer in the Russo-Japanese war. An eclectic and original person, after studying in a military college and naval academy he led a life marked by travel, initially with his family and then alone; before he was thirty he had already traveled the world several times. In the early 1900s he was sent to China to intervene in the "boxers' war"; during his stay the Russo-Japanese conflict broke out and he was the only Italian soldier, the post of orderly in the Russian army; performing this task he compiled a detailed diary of military operations on behalf of the Ministry of the Navy. On his return home he made a book of it, and gave a series of lectures on the activity of the Red Cross in Manchuria. Portrait from the collection 'Society of Veterans of the Patrie Battaglie'.
