caption: Gerolamo ROVETTA (1851-1910) Italian novelist and playwright. Son of the patriot Agostino and Maria Ghisi, fatherless since 1860, he grew up surrounded by journalists, writers and artists who frequented his mother's literary salon. In his works there is a careful psychological observation of the wealthy post-Risorgimento society. A prolific and highly successful author, the dissipated life brought him into severe economic hardship, leading him to commit suicide before he was sixty. Autograph portrait with dedication from the collection 'Society of Veterans of the Patrie Battaglie'. Photograph by Varischi & Artico, Milan, April 3, 1907
