Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Honor and Glory of Italy, the tomb of Matilda of Canossa in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. At his death in 1115, Matilda gave all his possessions to the Papal State. She was buried in the Abbey of San Benedetto Po at Mantova, but his remains were moved first to Castel Sant'Angelo and then finally to San Pietro in Vatican, and placed together with those of the apostles and martyrs of the faith, on the initiative of Pope Urban VIII in 1645.
