title: POPE BENEDICT IX - Teofilatto OF AUDITORS Tuscolani

subject date: 2009-09-03

caption: POPE BENEDICT IX (approximately 1012 - 1055 or 1056), aka Teofilatto III of Tuscolani Conti, born in Rome, elected in 1033, resigned in 1044. He was brought to Rome by Emperor Conrad II. In his dissolute life he found himself three times on the papal throne, and had with Sylvester III and Gregory VI accusation of simony, which he preferred not to answer. The Catholic Encyclopedia has described it as "... a disgrace to the Church." Portrait, detail from a chromolithographic postcard of the 'Collection of the Popes Romans' dedicated to Pope Pius X and blessed by Him (in whole # 5069). Rome, October 1903
