caption: QUEBEC ''The Foundation of Quebec by Champlain''. Samuel de Champlain (1567 – December 25, 1635), French explorer, cartographer and writer, sailed up the coasts of Acadia, testing the characteristics of the territory during various expeditions with the peaceful collaboration of the natives, in order to find the ideal place for a French colony; in 1608 he located it at the pointe de Québec of the St. Lawrence River, where he built the first houses and tested the fertility of the land with various crops. The city of Quebec would later become an important hub for the trade of furs and other resources of Canada. He continued to explore the territory in the belief that he could find a passage to Asia and China. In 1609 the explorer, with two other Frenchmen and some Amerindian companions, Huron, Montagnais and Algonquins, continued his excursions into the territory of the Iroquois, locating the great lake that bears his name. Painting by Ambroise Louis Garneray (19 February 1783 – 11 September 1857), France 19th century.
