caption: Giuseppe GARIBALDI (4 July 1807 – 2 June 1882) monument dedicated to the Hero of the Two Worlds by his hometown. Begun on a project by Antoine Étex (1808 - 1888) and completed by Gustave Deloye (1838 - 1899), inaugurated on 4 October 1891, the monument features the full-length bronze figure of the leader with a red shirt, his right fist closed and his left hand resting on his sword, standing on an imposing marble base, on either side of which rest two lions, also in bronze. In the allegorical figure in the centre, also in bronze, France and Italy watch over the cradle of the newborn hero. Photograph by Elena Piccini, Nice 1991.
