Jöns Jacob BERZELIUS (August 20, 1779 – August 7, 1848), Swedish chemist. Among his discoveries were the identification of three elements in the periodic table: silicon, selenium, and thorium. In 1813, he changed the writing of chemical formulas by introducing letter symbols. He is considered one of the fathers of modern chemistry, along with John Dalton and Antoine Lavoisier.
