caption: Rupert BROOKE (3 August 1887 – 23 April 1915) British poet. A talented, athletic and good-looking young man, he soon became very popular, frequenting literary circles and political and social personalities including Winston Churchill, Maynard Keynes, Edward Thomas, Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury group, of which, however, he was not a member. After having published the collection ''Poesia Giorgiana, 1911 - 1912'' with Edward Marsh and after a short trip to Europe, to recover from a nervous breakdown he left for a tour of the United States, Canada and the South Seas, publishing the travel diaries as a correspondent for ''The Westminster Gazette''. In September 1914 he enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, taking part in the Antwerp expedition of the 63rd Royal Naval Division. His most famous collection ''1914 and other poems'' was published posthumously in May 1915, preceded by the publication in a literary magazine of the two war sonnets ''The Dead Man'' and ''The Soldier''; his death at a young age on a military hospital ship, already known, favored the myth of the war poet, young and beautiful, fallen in battle, in a historical context that needed to fuel patriotic sentiment to face the tragedies of the first conflict world. Portrait of the German painter Clara Ewald (22 October 1859 - 15 January 1948), painting, Germany 1911.
