title: HILLARY ON EVEREST - SUNDAY COURIER 1953

subject date: 2002-05-22

caption: MOUNTAINEERING ''The summit of the world has been conquered. A British expedition team, composed of New Zealander Edmund Percival Hillary (July 20, 1919 – January 11, 2008) and Nepalese guide Tenzing Norgay (May 29, 1914 – May 9, 1986), has reached the summit of Everest (8,888 m), the highest point on Earth, with the aid of oxygen breathing apparatus. Three small flags were unfurled on the summit: those of Great Britain, the United Nations, and Nepal.'' Drawing by Walter Molino (November 5, 1915 – December 8, 1997) for the cover of ''La Domenica del Corriere'', the illustrated weekly supplement of the new Corriere della Sera. Milan, June 14, 1953.
