BALLOON Ten days after the first manned hot air balloon ascent, which took place in France on 21 November 1783 thanks to the Montgolfier brothers, who exploited the physics of air expansion due to temperature variations, obtaining a lighter gaseous fluid capable of "floating" in the denser atmosphere, their rival Jacques Charles (12 November 1746 – 7 April 1823) and his assistant Nicolas-Louis Robert (alias Marie-Noël Robert, 1761 - 1828, the younger of the two brothers who had collaborated on the project) took off from the Tuileries Garden on 1 December 1783 in a balloon filled with hydrogen, descending 44 km from Paris in the countryside between Nesle and Hédouville. The minutes of the event were compiled by Charles himself, and signed by him along with Robert, Jean Burgaret, parish priest of Nesle, Charles Philinnet, parish priest of Frénoy, Thomas Hutin, trustee of this parish, and the honored parish priest of Hédouville, Monsignor the Duke of Chartres. Print, France, 18th century.
