caption: CAESAR Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BC - 44 BC) The battle of Pharsalus between the troops of Julius Caesar and those of Pompey, who were defeated. The battle took place on August 9, 48 BC near the ancient city of Pharsalus. The army led by Pompey was clearly superior in terms of numbers, more than 100 cohorts against the 80 at Julius Caesar's disposal. Alongside Pompey were Lentulus, Scipio, Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus and the ''traitor'' Labienus. His tactic involved breaking through the opposing line on the left side, using the cavalry composed of almost 7,000 men and commanded by Labienus. But his plan was destined to fail because Caesar, having foreseen it, had placed the best soldiers he had available on his right. The charge of Labieno's soldiers was worthily opposed by the X and XII legion and in the meantime Pompey's troops gave way on all the other fronts. Julius Caesar's victory was clear and caused 15,000 deaths and 24,000 prisoners among the enemy. Miniature by Jean Fouquet (1415/1420 – 1481), France, 15th century.
