title: MADAMA BUTTERFLY

subject date: 2004-09-06

caption: Giacomo PUCCINI (1858 - 1924) ''Madama Butterfly'' poster by Adolf Hohenstein (18 March 1854 – 12 April 1928), for the premiere of the opera. Cio Cio-San, painfully aware of her illusory role in the life of her husband, who considers their marriage a mere exotic pastime, makes the ultimate sacrifice of leaving her son to Pinkerton and his Western wife Kate; to entrust him to them, she makes him sit on a mat, blindfolded and with a small American flag in his hands, just before committing suicide by slitting his throat with the ritual blade of the jigai. Colour lithograph G. Ricordi & C. - Editori, Milan, 17 February 1904.
