title: WOODCUT PORTRAIT OF VLAD TEPES

subject date: 2006-02-13

caption: VLAD TEPES (1431-1476) Feared in Wallachia, ancient Romania, for his ferocity in battle; through various vicissitudes, he was also emperor for a certain period, fighting against the Ottoman Empire of Mehmet II, which was pressing at the gates of Europe. His brutality in the fight against the invading Turks is historically proven and perhaps is the basis of the legend later romanticized in Bram Stoker's book (Dracula, 1897) several centuries later. In a letter sent to the King of Hungary on February 11, 1462, Vlad Tepes states that in the "last three months," counted with obsessive precision, he has executed "23,883 Turks." The preferred method was impalement (tepes in Romanian means the impaler), but other atrocities are also historically proven. Legend has it that he is the vampire Dracula of Transylvania.
