caption: VISCONTI VENOSTA CASTLE in Grosio. Its construction dates back to the second half of the 14th century at the behest of the Visconti family of Milan; it is one of the few castles in Valtellina spared from the destruction carried out by the Grisons. Its strategic location allowed the Visconti family to conquer the County of Bormio in 1376. It is from this historical episode that the fortress takes its name 'Visconti Venosta Castle'. The castle's main feature is its double wall, considered a sort of refuge for the population in times of danger. However, over the years, it has been suggested that the double enclosure was used to accommodate retractable ladders as needed. Archaeological excavations are currently underway inside the castle, which have led to the discovery of a pre-existing settlement dating back to the Iron Age. Photograph by Elena Piccini, 2004
