caption: Mary READ (1685 - April 8, 1721) was a female pirate. She was raised from childhood to be a man. She only took on a female role when she married and had children. Widowed, she chose to live her life as a man and, under the pseudonym of Mark Read, managed to embark to fight in the ranks of the English Navy. She was captured by Rackham's pirates who attacked the ship on which she was aboard, and she joined them, as her courage was truly exceptional. On the same ship, she met Anne Bonny, also a woman and a pirate, with whom she was the protagonist of legendary feats of courage and piracy. Watercolor print, 18th century
