THEATRE plan of the Greek theatre of Epidaurus. The building, attributed by Pausanias to Polykleitos the Younger who designed it in the 4th century BC, was already recognized in ancient times as an example of notable harmony of proportions and acoustics. The cavea that houses the spectators, consists of 34 tiers of seats in the lower area, divided by narrow stairways into 12 sectors; the upper area, further away from the central area where, after extensive conservative restoration, shows still take place today, later added about twenty tiers of seats, around the 2nd century BC, separated by a corridor called diazoma. Engraving, 19th/20th century.
