caption: VATICAN Bishop with cope and Bishop with chasuble. The cope (pluvial, cappa, mantus) is a liturgical mantle almost reaching the feet, open at the front and fastened on the chest with a clasp; when extended it has the shape of a semicircle with a radius of 1 meter and 40 to 1 meter and 60 centimetres. The back is adorned with the so-called 'shield'. In Italy the name cope is preferred because it has the shape of a cloak that protects from rain and bad weather, while outside Italy it is called cappa, in Spain also mantus. The celebrant uses it mainly for solemn blessings that are done at the altar; to processions; to absolution to the coffin or to the mound or to the pall; to the solemn prayers on Good Friday; at the Easter Vigil. At Vespers and solemn Lauds, as well as at the end of solemn Matins, the celebrant and also the assistants and other clerics use it. The priest assistant at the pontifical functions and at the first mass of a new priest also uses it. The chasuble or chasuble is the external liturgical garment of the bishop and the priest in the celebration of the Holy Mass.
