caption: VATICAN Camerlengo, Cardinal, and Prelate. Camerlengo: from the Medieval Latin camarlingus, derived from the Frankish kamerling, "officer of the sovereign's chamber." This position arose in the 12th century (camerarius) as head of the financial administration of the Curia and the temporal goods of the Holy See (camera thesauraria). The camerlengo, usually a high prelate, was always a cardinal from the 15th century. Currently, the camerlengo of the Roman Church is the cardinal who presides over the so-called Apostolic Camera and who carries out the task of caring for and administering the temporal goods and rights of the Holy See, even during its vacancy. Print from the collection of illustrated plates "Per la Storia dell'Abbigliamento," published individually from 1861 to 1890 in the "Münchener Bilderbogen" by the publisher Braun & Schneider of Munich, later collected in a volume.
