On July 27, 1993, around 11pm, the firefighters received a call reporting smoke from a parked car: they rushed to the scene and it was already late when they identified the presence of a bomb, which killed the officer in the explosion. of Municipal Police Alessandro Ferrari, who had made the call, the 3 firefighters Carlo La Catena, Sergio Pasotto and Stefano Picerno, who intervened to discover the bomb, as well as Moussafir Driss, a homeless Moroccan who was sleeping unaware on a bench. The criminal act, traced back to ''Cosa Nostra'', is considered a retaliation against the fight against the mafia, in the context of the series of attacks which between 1992 and 1993 also targeted judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, among others.
