Entrance to the PAC (Pavilion of Contemporary Art) cordoned off after the devastating effects of a car bomb that exploded on 27 July 1993; around 11pm, the firefighters had received a call reporting smoke from a parked car: having rushed to the scene, it was already late when they identified the presence of a bomb, which killed the municipal police officer Alessandro in the explosion Ferrari, who had made the call, the 3 firefighters Carlo La Catena, Sergio Pasotto and Stefano Picerno, who intervened to discover the bomb, as well as Moussafir Driss, a homeless Moroccan who was sleeping unaware on a bench. The criminal act, traced back to ''Cosa Nostra'', is considered a retaliation against the fight against the mafia, in the context of the series of attacks which between 1992 and 1993 also targeted judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, among others. The Contemporary Art Pavilion was designed by Ignazio Gardella (Mario Gardella, 30 March 1905 – 15 March 1999) between 1949 and 1953, renovating the stables of the Villa Reale.
